Why are we skating left, counter clockwise?
The answer seems to lie in the fact that the vast majority of people, 85 to 90 percent, are right-handed. And besides being right-handed, they are usually also right-legged. That is why they can put a little more force with the right leg than with the left leg, and therefore skate faster through the corner.
Incidentally, skating is not the only sport in which the rounds are driven to the left. Also in athletics, motorsport and equestrian sports almost everything goes against the clock.
